Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question particular rulings made by the official, echoing the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
